Your hosts, Simon & Kirstine, welcome you to the all-new Carpenters Arms.
With plenty of character and really friendly, cheerful staff, The Carpenter's Arms has a good mix of both locals and visitors.
It is comfortable and understated with stools, lots of tables and a roaring log fire in wintertime.
- half a mile from Newbury bypass- close to Newbury racecourse & Highclere Castle- accommodation rooms- homecooked pub food & Sunday lunch- dog friendly- totally refurbished in 2018
And pubs don't come in settings much better than that of The Carpenters Arms, Burghclere, either, which overlooks Watership Down, the inspiration for the famous story and film.

My warm chicken, bacon and anchovy salad was sublime, the decor and ambience was great, and Maddie the waitress was an articulate, attentive and thoroughly entertaining hostess. Daniel Hancock5 StarSecond time we've stayed here and have to say it's one of the friendliest, attentive and generous hotels I've stayed at. The walk in shower in room 1 was amazing, free crisps/cake and coffee for the coffee machine, shower gels and breakfast etc all included.
Only watch out is that Sunday there's no food being served after 4pm, the nearest restaurant is like 5 miles away and gets booked up quickly so without local takeaways you could get stuck for food on Sunday, every other day food served late.
Truly a great hotel, very helpful and friendly every time I needed help or requested anything. Room showing its age a little but nothing a little bit of paint and update wouldn't cure but actually found it a very nice laid back room and pub. Incredibly quiet during the night, large bathroom and breakfast (same as last time we come here) is also amazing.

Rebecca Moore4 StarGreat Country pub, recently taken over by new owners, Simon and Kristine. Have already done a great job at upgrading it, with some great eating and drinking spaces. Food was very good, especially the yummy breakfast. The rooms are being slowly being refurbed, however they were comfortable and had nice touches like the snacks and coffee machine. Great little place to stay if you are visiting Highclere Castle, Would highly recommend.Friday 15th July 2022
